MOJ of the Antarctic
MOJ of the Antarctic
is a one woman show, (Mojisola Adebayo) that takes as it's point of departure the real life story of Ellen Craft, a slave in 1840s Georgia who escaped by performing an act of triple passing, as white, as a man and as disabled. This act, undertaken with her husband who posed as her slave secured their freedom and became a book they wrote about it RUNNING 1000 MILES TO FREEDOM. Mojisola links the exploitation of people, through slavery, historic and contemporary, with the exploitation of the planet, through consumerism and greed which has let to climate change and loss of habitats.
I was honoured to be asked to travel to the Antarctic Pennisula with Moj to create images and video to be incorporated into this amazing piece of theatre. While others on our eco-tourist ship were photographing penquins Mojisola was transforming into a plantation owner, or sailor, a slave or survivor of multiple psychic and physical assaults.
These images are taken out of context but will, I hope, provide a flavour of the original product, MOJ OF THE ANTARCTIC.
